For you true happiness could be in the first bite of a really cheesy burger, or a forkful of a delectably crumbly and sweet Newyork cheesecake, but if you’re in search of true happiness and overall job satisfaction, you should grab a basket of fruits instead.

The old adage of ‘an apple a day’ has rung true and profound happiness is yours by consuming fruits and vegetables everyday. A detailed study, published in Social Indicators Research, discovered that if you eat eight or more servings of fresh produce every day, you will be far more happier and have much better mental health than ever before.

This study, which was carried out in Australia for over two years with researchers from Warwick University in England joining hands with scientists at the University of Queensland, Australia, studied the eating patterns of over 12000 people to get to this conclusion. The happiness you feel after consuming a large amounts of fruits could be compared to that of the happiness felt by an unemployed person on scoring a job.

Why Do Fruits Make Us Happy?

There are a variety of answers to that question, from why do mangoes reduce depression or bananas lift your mood instantly, to the fact that junk food causes crashes in your body and makes you snarky due to sudden and severe hunger pangs – not to mention the unpleasant effects of bloating on your overall mood – fruits are fresh, delicious, light and make you feel good.

Have you ever heard of anyone feeling bloated due to eating too many watermelons? Or did anyone ever say that they can’t move because they just had too many strawberries? Did you ever read about a person feeling too tired or severely hungry after hours of consuming 3 apples or a couple of bananas or a bowl full of blueberries?

The fact of the matter is that fruits are filled with the good stuff – fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals and so much more. Research has also found that the high levels of pigments in fruits called carotenoids is linked to greater feelings of optimism. Plus, consuming fruits with vitamin B12 boosts a neurotransmitter in your brain referred to as serotonin which plays a big role in regulating your moods. Then there are the antioxidants which always work as a great mood booster.

We always knew that emotional well-being was connected to our nutrition, but who knew that the extensive and exhaustive search for happiness by people the world over would end in a bowl of fresh fruit?
